Quill and Fritter are on the road to recovery together.

Fritter the kitten arrived at the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) as a transfer from a local shelter that asked for KHS’s help with the feline.

“His right eye was out of the socket and extremely ulcerated and painful. We removed the eye to alleviate his pain and give him another chance at life,” Claxton tells PEOPLE.

The kitten was recovering from this ordeal at the ICU of KHS’s animal hospital when he met Quill, who also ended up at KHS due to a painful medical issue.

KHS tried to save the puppy’s entire jaw but found that the pup’s “infection had spread to a point where it was medically necessary to remove half of his lower jaw.”

“So we let them hang out together in our treatment area,” Claxton says, adding that it was clear both animals were “in need of a friend” because they started playing together almost immediately.

“They play all the time.” the veterinary technician says. “They play until they get tired, and then they nap with each other in a cuddle pile.”

Fritter and Quill are now bounding around a new location. After both pets stopped requiring in-hospital care, the pair moved into a foster home together.

“They’re both doing great and healing in a foster home together. We are so thankful that they were able to go to the same home together to continue healing,” Claxton says.

The animal buddies are not available for adoption, but Claxton says when the animals are ready to go to a forever home, KHS hopes to adopt out the pets as a duo — so the cat and dog can stay pals for the rest of their lives.

“I think what people can take away from Quill and Fritter’s story is how the healing power of friendship occurs across species,” she adds.
