Locals in southerly California could be in for a bit of a surprise on Sunday , October 7 , when a Space rocket come in to domain will do hearable transonic booms nearby .

The launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 roquette from Vandenberg Air Force Base will be taking place Sunday eve , scheduled for 7.21pm local clip . It will be acquit theSAOCOM 1Asatellite into outer space , an Argentine radio detection and ranging watching artificial satellite .

This will be the first launch from California where SpaceX also attempts to shoot down the first stage of the Falcon 9 back on land . Previous landing have either been at ocean on a drone ship , or on land at Florida ’s Kennedy Space Center .

For that intellect , the Air Force has issued a warning that locals could hear multiple transonic booms during the landing , in display case anyone was worried by the sudden loud noises .

“ Local occupant may see the first stage of the Falcon 9 return to Vandenberg AFB , ” they state in aFacebook post . “ Residents from Santa Barbara , Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the landing operation . ”

The launch was in the beginning schedule to take place on October 6 , but has now been press back by 24 hours . SpaceXsaid on Twitterthat the rocket and its payload were “ intelligent ” , with the extra time being used to complete pre - flight checks .

Previous launches from Vandenberg have used a monotone ship in the ocean for their landing place . But this launching will use a concrete landing geographical zone about 400 meters ( 1,300 feet ) from the launching pad , name Landing Zone 4 , following interview   on the impact to local wildlife .
