We could have had The Wire , with lamia , aGuillermo del Toroshow full of tomfoolery , lead off with anal retentive rip worms . But Fox had dissimilar architectural plan for GDT ’s tv set show — and anyone else notice similarities between Strain and Fringe ?
This weekend at Fangoria ’s Weekend of Horror , director and author Guillermo del Toro sat down with co - authorChuck Hoganto talk of the town about their new Bible seriesThe Strain . After yet again call today ’s sparkle - vamps square and praise Hellenic Eastern European vampiric lore , he reveal how The Strain could have been the most amazing TV show ever .
“ We pop out cooperate on it about three yea ago , ” GDT explained to the crowd . “ Originally I indite an extended [ serial publication ] Book for Fox TV . It was a long - form narrative , because I was completely addicted to The Wire . And I thought what if we bring that kind of reality into a vampiric pandemic . I went to Fox with a 12 - page proposal . And they said , “ We care it . Can you turn it into a comedy ? ” And I fucking grab my just the ticket and work aside . ”
“ I could n’t find any other format . I did n’t want to do it as a motion picture , because then I would have to shorten the character arcs . It would be the same solidifying of problems . I knew there was some fury and brutality in the proposal that I wanted to try out . And cable may have allowed me to do it . I find line these days to actually be much more spare than the movies . And [ when you ’re making a motion picture ] they ’re always trying to do everything PG-13 , so fuck that shit . ”
“ I talked to my literary factor … . I want to find a partner who was heavy into procedural poppycock . Because when I wrote Mimic , and I could write fucking Mimic and I was n’t being ass - raped , I find that my New York looked anything but New York . I say a lot of bad books and then this man [ The Strain co - generator Chuck Hogan ] come out like a fucking prince charming and I understand his books and my hair drift and medicine fall . I was addict . He ’s a sick whoreson . We ended up collaborating in more elbow room … some of the disturbed shit in the book . Some of it is his fault . When you get to the passage that admit to anal parentage worms , this [ i.e. , Hogan ] is the man who made it . You ’ll get to it . ”
Also interesting ( apart from the anal blood worms ) is the fact that the start of GDT ’s The Strain read a lot like the get-go of Fox ’s new TV show Fringe . Now the music director was not in person making any claim of copy - catting , BUT comparisons have been made by others . Guillermo del Toro merely said :
“ I pitched it to Fox four plus age ago , so if you see anything to do with Fringe , either it ’s a concurrence , or blame Fox . Because the [ Strain ] pitch afford with a 747 block dead in the middle of the runway . The CVC comes in and opens the door , and everyone is bushed . So call Fox if you have any complaint , I myself do n’t imagine twice about it . ”
