But for all its sheer twists , big reveals , and exposed secrets , the biggest surprisal came as the installment end . Not just for its revealing of the true whereabouts of Doctor Manhattan , or how that reveal is , uh , let ’s just say cracked open , though — but rather what play over it .

As the sequence builds to its grand climax and the credits roll , Watchmen ’s soundscape is overpower by a heady , piano - forward , and just stunningly beautiful implemental screen of David Bowie ’s fabled “ Life on Mars ? ”
Since the episode aired last Sunday ( well , technically very early Monday cockcrow , my time ) , I ’ve not been able to stop think about it , and how much it completely bowled me over in the import . It ’s not helped that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross , gratefully , officially upload a uninfected official translation of the piece to Nine Inch Nails ’ YouTube epithelial duct in the retiring few daylight , so I could have it on loop .
It ’s just so … dependable ? It ’s so unspoilt . I mean , of form it is , it’sDavid crashing Bowie . It ’s “ Life on Mars ? ” , one of the all - fourth dimension greats in a body of work that isprimarily all - time great , and one that contextually and lyrically works incredibly well , of course , forthe story of Jon Osterman . But the cover itself is genuinly noteworthy beyond that .
It ’s both paradoxically round-eyed and yet builds to something intensely grand , punctuated by that steady baseline in the background that feels remindful of another of the series ’ best musical pieces , the fabulously titled “ NUN WITH A MOTHERF*&*ING GUN . ” The fuzzy noise that muffles the sharper tones of the forte-piano as it loiter and intensifies — as synths , guitars , and other legal document lento come into the composition , adding layer of sound and straining on top of what was at first exculpated , stark piano . Like memories swamp back into something that was once lock away .

Maybe I should n’t have been surprised — Reznor and Ross ’ soundtrack for Watchmen has consistently remained one of itsmost brilliant assets . Week after hebdomad , from apt cover work like this to heartpoundingly catchy original pieces that stand up shoulder to shoulder with the combine top executive of compelling storytelling , Regina King and Jean Smart , and even That Lube Man to vie for the military position of Best Thing About Watchmen in what has managed to apace become one of the best appearance of the year .
But the fact I still am probably run to show what an impressive effort Watchmen has revealed itself to be . What ’s another happy surprise in a series that ’s been full of them ?
