While we preserve to wait for Motorola to officially declare itsrebooted Razr , I want to take some time to remember another sound from a tenacious time ago . That ’s right , I ’m let the cat out of the bag about the original Motorola Razr : the last insolent phone that anyone gave a damn about .
This calendar month marks the fifteenth anniversary of the world being introduced to the Razr , and in the years since its release , we ’ve watch phones develop from two - piece clamshells to slick methamphetamine bricks . But now with the imminent comer of twist like theGalaxy Fold , it seems the impudent headphone is making a new age comeback .

While the Razr never had the legendary toughness of aNokia 3310 , the Razr was the “ it ” telephone set age before the iPhone subsist . In the mid-2000s , it felt like everyone had one , and if you did n’t , you almost sure roll in the hay a lot of people that did . The Razr was thin , stylish , and frontwards - thought process in ways Motorola itself may not have even actualise at the clip .
It had two screens : one out the outside not much bigger than a postage stamp ( with a hilarious 96 x 80 resolution ) for checking notifications ( before they were even call notifications ) , and another slightly larger covert on the inside for navigate the headphone ’s UI ( with a gamy , but still laughable 176 x 220 resolution ) .
There was also a front - facing camera that could entrance both selfies or traditional pics depending on if the telephone set was capable or not . In compare , it contain Apple three years to put the first front - facing camera on an iPhone , something that did n’t happen until the iPhone 4 was unfreeze in 2010 , most six years after the Razr ’s debut in 2004 . Just imagine how things might be different today if Motorola could have predicted the selfie roar and put more R&D into its other cellphone cameras .

While modern phones like the Moto G7 are obviously much more powerful, when compared to the Razr, it looks kind of boring.Photo: Sam Rutherford (Gizmodo)
Meanwhile , the Razr ’s calorie-free - up keys experience like a sight straight out of sci - fi . Numbers were n’t separate into individual key but instead used a ultra swoop to separate various function . And the cool blue ( or white bet on the simulation ) backlight made me sense like I had a prop from Bladerunner in my handwriting . The phone even shook up the gadget populace ’s color roadblock , as it was usable in a rainbow of shadowiness include red , over-embellished , blue , and of trend , an unforgettable shade of metallic pinko .
While the earphone ’s fare and screen door resolution seem archaic by modern standards , it ’s all usable and easy to navigate even in unfamiliar custody . And despite measuring less than half an inch thick at its slender point , the Razr still manage to feature a obliterable battery . How ’s that for mundanity ?
However , one affair the Razr did n’t have was durability . in person , I owned three Razrs between 2005 and 2008 when I finally get an iPhone 3G. The first died after I fell out of a canoe . The second encounter its end when I intentionally move for a swim before remove the headphone in my pocket . ( Forgive me , it was the mid - aughts , and obviously putting payload pockets on board boxershorts was cool . ) But the third is still with me to this 24-hour interval , and after pulling it out of a draftsman and plugging it in , it fired up instantly .

While my car was totaled, the fragile Razr somehow survived the accident.Photo: Sam Rutherford (Gizmodo)
But aside from easily being damaged by water , the Razr was a tenuous contraption . It often finger like look at it incorrectly was enough to make its battery pop out , and I ca n’t even echo the issue of Razrs I ’ve see with whacky front screens . But that was the price people willingly pay up for a gadget so light and slick it practically disappeared whenever it was dropped into a pocket or pocketbook .
I have a circle of store stored on this phone : picture of my childhood hotdog , text I ca n’t yield to unearth ( include a few that will stay forever unread ) , even a demo variation of Tetris , which I never unlocked because I was n’t entirely sure how to pay for it . And while the Razr as a whole was unbelievably fragile , somehow my headphone endure being flung 30 feet down the highway after I rolled my Ford Explorer during a torrential electrical storm in the eye of nowhere Pennsyltucky . And the phone has the pics to turn out it .
see back , it ’s no curiosity Motorola sell more than 130 million Razrs in the dyad of just five years or so . The speech sound was a phenomenon . It took the pattern of theStarTACand updated it in a way the suck masses ’s minds 15 years ago . And with Motorola rumour to be working on rebooting the Razr for 2019 with a foldable screen , there ’s a opportunity they could recreate that magic again .

Look, at removable battery. How quaint.Photo: Sam Rutherford (Gizmodo)
Look , I ’m still a bit questioning that people will fork over $ 1000 + for a revamped Razr in 2019 , even one with an extra fancy show . But if there ’s any phone that merit a 2d ( third ? ) chance at life , it ’s the Razr .
