Diana Eng of Project Runway celebrity is a eccentric ’s fashion designer . Today , she ’s teaching us how to sew LED into your clothing .
We ’re all conversant with the LEDbelt buckleand the Motorola / Burtonjacket , but now we ’re grabbing way by the thread and evidence you how to make your own tech - inspired wear ( and not look like an MIT project in the process ) . After the jump , we ’re gon na show you how to sew an LED onto your shirt in 8 easy steps . Yeah , we ’re gon na sew . But we will sew while drinking a beer to re - emphasize our masculinity .

Before you begin , you ’ll needconductive thread(the same material used to make fencing vests ) , a sewing machine , a hand stitchery needle , pliers , scissors , an light-emitting diode , a 1,000 ohm resistor ( which can be purchased at any Radio Shack ) , alligator clips ( also from Radio Shack ) , and a 9 - volt battery .
1 ) Start by cut the remainder wires ( or leads ) of the resistor down to a shorter length .
2)Bend the lead in a round build . You ’ll observe that one light-emitting diode has a longer jumper cable . This is the + side of the light-emitting diode that electrical energy flows into . The short lead of the LED is the ground side . Like the resistance , disregard the leads and bow them into loops . Make the longer lead + a bigger eyelet . bow the loops so that the light-emitting diode can pose plane on the fabric .

3)Mark where the components will go on the fabric . ensure that the resistor is placed by the side of the LED that has a larger loop .
4)Thread your sewing political machine . If the thread is too thick to pass through the needle , you could use a larger needle .
5)Sew lines and result gap where you ’d like the resistance and LED to be ( basically you will be sewing between the marks you made on the framework ) . Be certain to backstitch the goal where you want to add your components ( to back stitch , just push the reverse button on your sewing machine and the machine sews backwards ) . Backstitching keep the end of screw thread from add up undone and insure that there is more aerofoil domain for the components to make contact with . Using a paw stitchery needle start out from the back .

6)Hand stitch the loop of one jumper cable to the boundary of a run up dividing line .
7)Hand stitch the resistance and LED into the tour . Using a hand sewing needle start from the back of the material ( so as to avoid loose threads in the front ) . Hand run up the loop topology of one lead to the edge of a stitch line . Be sure that the hand run up part overlaps with the sewn line .
8)Once all of your components are sewn on , add together a powerfulness supplying . Attach one end of an alligator clip to the + side of the battery and the other end to the resistor side of the tailor short letter ( advert to red cartridge holder in photo ) . Using the 2nd alligator clip impound one end to the side of the battery and the other destruction to the LED side of the run up line ( refer to green clip in photo ) . The LED should light up . Now throw on the shirt and hit the Ithiel Town .
