In the uncommon times I ’ve had , well , the time to actually playDungeons & Dragons , I ’ve never played a Warlock . I usually go for some form of Ranger , or a more traditional caster class . But in my many yr next to the biggest TTRPG around , I ’ve heard the hearsay about Eldritch Blast being the D&D combining weight of bringing a shotgun to a swordfight . But it ’s takenBaldur ’s Gate 3to make me realise just how true that is .
Eldritch Blast , for those unfamiliar , is a cantrip D&D Warlocks start the biz with . And for those unfamiliar with that terminology , a cantrip is a spell in D&D that can be cast an unlimited numeral of prison term between long rests — unlike traditional patch , which require spend one of your fictitious character ’s limited number of while slots , and those are only recovered during repose . The more brawny the spell , the humble amount of spell slot you usually have to use them , so cantrips are , for the most part , usually moderately minor in the grand dodging of all things Dungeoning and/or Dragoning . Clerics have Sacred Flame — which feels more like a Sacred Tickle in my experience with it inBaldur ’s Gate 3so far — and Wizards have Fire Bolt , for illustration . And Warlocks have Eldritch Blast : 1d10 forcefulness damage in the mannikin of a magical laser ray . Sounds basic enough !
It ’s been ready to hand to have as I ’ve explore the worlds above , below , and beyond across the Sword Coast in Larian ’s new subsequence to the legendary CRPG series Baldur ’s Gate . Although I’mplaying a Paladinmyself , theirparty in Baldur ’s Gate 3includes the Human Warlock Wyll , a dashing rogue who ’s made himself into a submarine through a pact with a devil identify Mizora . He ’s capital ! suspect , charming , but for as much as I love Wyll for hischaracter and story , I also get laid him equally as much because he is my said shotgun in Baldur ’s Gate 3 ’s many , many sword competitiveness . He has other spells — Hex is a great debuff , Hunger of Hadar is fun with a crew — but my buddy Wyll ? He is my walk , talking Eldritch Blast turret .

As a Warlock levels up in D&D — and in Baldur ’s Gate 3 , which is largely based on the fifth variation ruleset witha few tweak — Eldritch Blast goes from solid cantrip to one of the funniest , most powerful dick in their outfit . At 5th , 11th , and 17th degree ( Baldur ’s Gate 3 ’s advance detonating gadget at level 12 ) , they gain the ability to kindle two , three , and four beams at once severally , which can all be aimed at one or split between multiple targets . They can also take several Eldritch conjuration to make it even better . excruciating Blast add excess harm in the form of the Warlock ’s Charisma stat modifier to each beam , and that ’s always good . Where the Eldritch Blast of D&D 5e and the Eldritch Blast of Baldur ’s Gate 3 genuinely marry the systems of tabletop and picture game is with Repelling Blast , which gives each beam in Eldritch Blast the chance to send the target fly backwards up to 10 feet . And if there ’s anything that ’s better at judicious murder in either dungeon & Dragons or the physics - happy gameplay auto-mechanic of Baldur ’s Gate 3 , it ’s fall damage . In a secret plan where shoving someone off a cliff is just as valid a combat tactics as a steel smasher or a mighty patch , Eldritch Blast becomes the go - to for trolling Warlocks across Faerun .
correctly now in my playthrough of Baldur ’s Gate 3 , Wyll is level seven , so every twist of armed combat he can do , depend on rolls , about 25 equipment casualty across one or two targets , and have a chance at either pushing them further away from him and the other squishier members of my party or right off a drop to their doom , for free in sempiternity , from up to 120 foot away . It has saved my behind more than any successful sentiment check or martial skill at arms from my Paladin ever could . And most of all , it ’s playfulness . Eldritch Blast is n’t good because it ’s a low - cost , high equipment casualty magic spell , although it is that . Eldritch Blast is good because it ’s a marriage between the statistical crunch of Dungeons & Dragons combat and the storytelling fun of its roleplay .
I think it for when Wyll has trim zealous cultists about to down my Paladin as we take the product line to let some prisoners to bunk their base . I think back it for the times my company found itself surprised by the arrival of opposition reinforcements with most of our resources wipe out , only for Wyll to nuke them before they could even move into compass . I remember it for the time when , while infiltrating that aforementioned cultist base , I unintentionally found myself facing the ira of its prison warden — who I had not clear was a full two levels higher than anyone in my company . Combat started , she carry opening move , and nearly beat most of the group into an inch of their biography in a individual bout . Wyll was the first to go of our group , and he promptly blasted her through the window of her tower and careening to her dying in the chasm outside it . Eighty hit points do n’t think of anything to the power of gravity !

That’s Wyll in the background behind my Dragonborn. Don’t mind the horns, that’s Warlock business. Rude of you to even ask tbh.Screenshot: Larian Studios
So congratulations , Warlocks : I ultimately recognize how right you all are . As I gather my party and venture away into Baldur ’s Gate 3 , I ’ll be observe Wyll and his ready to hand cantrip by my side . And I might just roll a Warlock the next time Iactually have timeto toy strong-arm D&D , to boot .
