“ Are geologist … salutary than applied scientist ? … able to bore to the center of the Earth ? … the sexiest man [ sic ] alive ? ” Geologist Miles Traer ( previouslyhere&here ) typed “ Are geologists … ” into Google then used the eternal sleep of the alphabet and motorcar - complete to finish the questions . He then did his best to answer them . The ensue Q&A is pretty great .
Are geologists … able-bodied to drill to the centre of the Earth ?
In a word of honor , no . The center of the Earth is roughly 3,959 miles ( 6,371 km ) down . The deep hole that was ever drilled was the Kola Superdeep Borehole , at 7.6 knot ( 12.26 klick ) deep . That ’s 0.19 % of the way to the center of the Earth .

The Kola project was fund by the Soviet Union in the seventies and drilling proceeded from 1970 all they way to 1992 when the project was shut down . In true scientific style , their goal was simply to drill as far down as they could just to see what they could find . What they found was that as they drill , the heat energy and air pressure made oil production really unmanageable . The yap kept collapsing as the red-hot rock got , for lack of a better Word of God , squishy . Still , there were some pretty nerveless scientific discovery made and some confusing motion raised .
Before all of this , and despite the want of any tangible knowledge of what Earth ’s interior count like , John Quincy Adams , the former chairman of the United States , once ordereda missionto thecenter of the Earthusing tax payer dollars whose aim was at least in part to adjoin themole peoplewho know there . I really REALLY care I was fix that up .
