Alex Segura : Araña hold up a special space for me because I have such vivid memories of first show her adventures . It meant a band to see a Latinx Spider - character , and to get the prospect to write a novel that in some slipway re-introduce the graphic symbol to readers felt really of import and especial . Segura : In the book , we line up both Hero at very different points in their careers — Anya is starting out a bit aimless , and essay to find some steering in terms of how to be a torpedo . On the flipside , Miguel is reeling from a major tragedy and is n’t sure he even wants to be Spider - Man anymore . So when they assemble , we have two character that really involve each other , but they have to take in that , and they have to germinate to the point where they can facilitate each other . That felt really fascinating to me — to chronicle that struggle for Miguel , to take out him back to being a hero sandwich , and at the same time have Anya con from him and come up into her own . Honestly , when we speak about the idea , it felt up so natural that I was amazed we were get the chance to explore it first . Their moral force was my favorite part of the novel .

io9 : Obviously you ’re a novelist for a living as well as a comic writer , but what challenge are there in bringing characters made for the medium of comics into the literary mass medium ? How unlike is your approach than if you were script this as a comic ?
Segura : I think when you ’re writing comics you ’re collaborate — you’re starting the project and watching as others summate and expand on your idea . With a novel , while I recognize it ’s trifle in an existing sandpile — you’re variety of repel the whole sensory experience . I ca n’t rely on the artist to bestow visuals to my dialogue or prospect descriptions . It ’s a different kind of challenge . As a fan of both characters , I wanted to take the opportunity that prose cater and get into their pass a bit more than we might see in cartoon strip , and also to find a special balance — where the fib is wide open enough that newfangled readers can enjoy it , but also load with winks and nods for longtime readers . There are a few characters I was honestly surprised I got to use — so that was a bam .
