Anyone who longs for the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. whenThe Perry Bible Fellowshipupdated on a regular basis would do well to check out Jasper Rietman’sTRI / P. Much like Nicholas Gurewitch , Rietman plays with a Hellenic newspaper landing strip expressive style to create comics that withstand our expectations , forcing us to shift our perspectives as we mull them .
TRI / P is structured very much as a laugh strip : three panel terminate in a punchline . But each strip is entirely dumb , meaning that Rietman ’s jokes are only optic . It ’s clear that he has certain obsessions , which are explored through the comic strip : infinite travel , mythology , the human relationship between artistic creation and the spectator . And sometimes the jokes are n’t gentle ; TRI / P ask for our contemplation as much as for our eyeballs .
Because the strips are silent , and sometimes ask a mo or two of persuasion , they often feel less like ego - contained jokes than the germs of larger ideas . TRI / P might just make you laugh or scratch up your head word , but it might get you thinking about the worlds in which these strip might take place .
