The Perseverance rover has been toiling on the Martian surface for over three years , collecting rock samples that will eventually be brought to Earth if all goes according to plan . But the scouter has also picked up hitchhiker , in the contour of traces of Martian atmosphere that are hug into the “ headspace ” of the sample tube .

That ’s very exciting for atmospheric scientists , who so far have only analyse Mars ’ zephyr remotely , whether from orbiters characterizing the planet from on high or from rovers deliver read-out to experts on Earth . Should this all work , it ’ll be an unbelievable bonus for these scientists to analyze Martian tilt in ground - based labs .

But draw a blank the rock-and-roll sample , the material poppycock that planetary scientists desire will explicate Mars ’ phylogenesis , and which astrobiologists trust will arrest hints of ancient living on the fourth planet from the Sun .

“ People think of the Moon as airless , but it has a very tenuous atm that interact with the lunar airfoil rocks over metre , ” aver Just Simon , a geochemist at NASA ’s Johnson Space Center , in aNASA waiver . “ That include stately gases leaking out of the Moon ’s Interior Department and collect at the lunar aerofoil . ”

The team will give insights gained from the 2021 field of the Moon ’s very thin aura , which was establish on samples bring back by the Apollo 17 mission . The team put the gas in a cold yap ; by reduce the temperature in a sealed container , the squad was able to capture some gasoline in the sampling at the bottom of the trap . The same rules would apply to any interrogate of Martian atmosphere held in the headspace of the rock cores ’ sample tubes .

The Martian air travel will give researcher the hazard to understand how Martian dust strain through the planet ’s air , which sometimes whips up into Martian detritus devils — one of whichran right over Perseverancein 2022 . The air sample could also reveal how much water vapour rest just above the major planet ’s surface . That in turn could reveal facial expression of Mars ’ water cycle — a system that persists through the regular rhythm of Martian hoarfrost and thaws , though no liquid H2O is known to subsist on the planet ’s surface .

Mars ’ airwave has recently been a great locale for geographic expedition . For nearly three years , the intrepid Ingenuity helicopter flew in Mars ’ skies , thefirst craft to achieve powered , contain flighton another major planet .

But there ’s one expectant problem keeping NASA scientists from exploring the samples of Mars ’ control surface and sky : the price . TheMars Sample Return missionis an expensive one — first capped at $ 7 billion , and now estimated at about $ 11 billion — leading to delays in the charge timeline . In April , NASA asked diligence playersto make out up with ideas to make the commission feasible . At this point , Perseverance has collected over two dozen rock samples , chosen for their potentiality to unveil aspects of the planet ’s geochemistry , geologic account , and other aspects of its makeup and evolution .

At this point , using instruments capture , recover , and decipher the make-up of another satellite ’s sky seems like the prosperous part . The voiceless part is actually funding such an endeavor .
