In 19th and early 20th one C America , fledging bank depended on conveying stability and trust to their customers . That usually meant computer architecture — and the expression of dry pint - sized Greek and Roman repository in town all over the res publica .
“ Money was more local , ” explains photographerMichael Vahrenwald , whose series The People ’s Trustcaptures these structuresin their present - day material body . “ Banks disperse out and [ anchored ] individual communities , thousands of firm stone structures in the office of a handful of trash skyscraper business district across the globe . ” Of course , the twenty-four hour period of small local banking are long gone , and many of these grand structures have been sold off into commercial real estate of the realm : Today , they host things like McDonalds , CVS , wig shop , and even church service .
Iowa - born , New York - establish Vahrenwald has spend three class photograph these former symbol of fiscal security measures , found everywhere from the Bronx to Detroit . He explains in an artist ’s statement :

As I began photograph I could n’t avail but read the headstrong optimism in these edifice , the la-di-da way in which they were fortresses built to last — all that in contradistinction to what they ’re used for now . It fascinates me , that in their current state , these structures still design so much of their former authority . The project ’s not about what I care or do n’t wish , but about the how unexpended these building are today in a world where the esthetic ( as well as the simple facts ) of power , wealthiness , & category have all basically changed
